Black spiral staircase winds via Joseph Retailer within the St John Design District

London-based studio Sybarite designed a store for fashion label Joseph in the St John Design District that features round balconies, curved railings and spiral staircases evoking the architecture of the seaside city.

A black metal corkscrew staircase is one of the details based on St John’s coastal architecture from the 1940s and 50s.

With contrasting white polished marble steps, it rotates through a circular opening to move from womenswear on the ground floor to menswear and accessories on the first floor.

Smoky black glass surrounds the opening with a curved black balustrade that complements the decorative motifs. Sybarite said other details include the irregular wall cut-outs that make up windows.

The 243 square meter St John Design District is the label’s largest store to date and is one of a series that the British studio designed for the label.

In any case, Sybarite follows the theme of opposites that are common in Joseph’s clothing, with contrasting black and white tones and hard and soft materials.

“Our designs for Joseph are based on opposites and the unexpected to deliver a complete brand experience for customers,” said Simon Mitchell, Co-Founder of Sybarite.

White-painted walls and concrete floors provide the backdrop for black metalwork with LED lighting that frames clothes rails and extends in an angular shape to the ceiling.

Bases for bags and shoes made of OSB (Oriented-Strang Board), brass and Corian are arranged in groups on an area of the ground floor that is characterized by a brass grille embedded in the concrete floor.

Sybarite has also used geometric shapes from softer carpets, as well as rich lambskins and velvet upholstery in the dressing rooms to add cozier elements.
